Saturday
16th April was sunny and a wonderful day was had by 21 young ladies from
2nd Harpole Guides, Northampton and 1st Two Mile Ash Guides Milton
Keynes, when YES (Youth & Education Support) ran an Air Activity day
for them. The
day's activities were made up of stomp rockets, BMFA glider building and
flying, kite making and flying, Aeronautical map reading, Brooklands
Flying Club static aircraft to show them the moving surfaces and
controls and instruments, a hangar tour of FlyLight and Sloane
Helicopters, where we saw the full range of aircraft from CAA aircraft,
LAA Permit to Fly aircraft, to
micro-lights and civil, police and medical helicopters and rounded off
with an excellent lunch in the Pilots Mess. The
Girl Guides drew up their own Air Challenge badge, and certificates, and
we hope to repeat the experience later in the year with another few
troops taking part, and with good reports going to back to HQ, this may
be the start of some sort of Air Badge a la the Scouts. Some of the
girls have already indicated a desire to take part in the 6th Young
Aviators event at Sywell, on Saturday 17th September 2011. I'd
like to thank the YES helpers, Dave Irvine, Geoff Goodchild (former BMI
A330 Skipper) and his son Jacob (16 years old and 60 hours flying to
date), Elaine Hines a grandmother and a very keen helper and the even
keener 8 year old Jessica Knight, who wants to be a pilot, and who will
be 9 years old on 17th September - she was the first to sign up for YA
2011 after last year's event. Also
many thanks to Becky in Brooklands Hotel reception, Emma and all the
team in the Pilots mess, Richard Wallis (CFI) and instructor Claire
Leadbetter of Brooklands Flying Club, Cathy Vickers at FlyLight, Lawrie
Linskey and James Skinner at Sloane helicopters and Jeff Bell and Ed
Carter in the Sywell Tower for a superb day and of course to all the
guides and leaders from Northampton and Milton Keynes for making it a
